WineStaves from 2B are made from selected French oak and dry in the open air for at least two months to remove tannins. The subsequent storage lasts two years. WineStaves are toasted over an open oak fire using a special process, which gives them a unique character. The quantity used varies – depending on the desired wine type – between 0.5 and 3 WineStaves per 100 liters. The period of use can vary from 6 to 14 months.
Frequently asked questions about WineStaves
WineStaves are high-quality oak staves made from French oak that have been specially developed for ageing red and white wines. They represent a sustainable and economical alternative to classic wooden barrels or barriques – with an almost identical sensory effect.
The staves are made exclusively from French oak – the same wood used for the Orion barrels. After two months of natural open-air drying, they are stored for a further two years before being gently toasted over an open oak fire. This traditional process gives the staves their fine, balanced roasted aromas.
They emphasize the varietal typicity, promote structure and complexity and stabilize the color, especially in red wine, by increasing ellagic tannins. They also enable targeted aroma control – from subtle vanilla and toast notes to more complex roasted aromas.
The dosage varies between 0.5 and 3 staves per 100 liters of wine, depending on the desired wine style. The recommended contact time is 6 to 14 months. The staves can be used in tanks or barrels and easily removed at the end of maturation.
Yes, the wood comes from sustainably managed, PEFC-certified forests. Production is resource-friendly, without any chemical additives or foreign substances.
While chips or blocks offer a faster aroma release, staves provide a slow, harmonious and deep aroma integration – comparable to ageing in a real barrel.
Very close! The artisanal toasting over an open wood fire and the long storage of the oak create an aroma and structure profile that is almost indistinguishable from a classic barrique maturation.
